How to use the school-holiday calendar

This interactive calendar displays school holidays and public holidays from up to 10 European countries simultaneously. Use the color scale above to understand holiday density — green dates mean fewer people on holiday, while red dates indicate peak travel periods when most of the selected population is off work or school.

Plan smarter vacations

By comparing school-holiday schedules across countries, you can find the best travel windows to avoid crowds at popular European destinations. Choose dates when the countries you plan to visit have school in session — that means fewer tourists, lower prices, and a more relaxed experience.

Frequently asked questions

How is the holiday density calculated?

The percentage shown represents the proportion of the selected population that is on school holidays or public holidays on each date. Bridge days (days between a public holiday and a weekend) include a probability factor — for example, 80% of people may take Friday off when Thursday is a public holiday.

Can I customize which countries are shown?

Yes — use the settings page to select your home country and the countries you want to compare. You can select individual regions or zones within countries that use zone-based school-holiday systems (like France, Germany, or the Netherlands).

How far ahead does the calendar go?

The calendar covers school years 2025-2026 and 2026-2027. Data is updated as official school-holiday dates are published by each country's education ministry.
